Kari Martin | Coach/Owner

I am the current owner of CrossFit Teneo. In 2016 I was a member at this box when the original owners decided they needed to move on to other things. I had been working on opening my own box so it was the perfect opportunity. I was getting married that same month so it wasn’t the perfect time, but we made it work! I am married with 2 extremely athletic boys. I spend my week in the box and my weekend traveling for Motocross or Gymnastics depending on the season. We work really hard to make and keep Teneo a family. We support each other in ways you just don’t see anywhere else!

My Background: In 2011 a friend talked me into trying a CrossFit class. I had no interest in going especially at 5:30am but I went. It was that moment I found what would change everything about fitness for me. I went in feeling pretty fit and left confused. I couldn’t lift the bar, I was a decent runner but paired with the other movements my legs were heavy. I just really sucked, I wanted to quit and leave. Then the community came in. They cheered me on and pushed me to finish. That’s when I  fell in love with CrossFit.

After my first month I wished I had found this sooner. I didn’t understand why this wasn’t in schools and why more kids/teens were not experiencing this awesome lifestyle. That was my “ah-ha” moment and when I decided to get my L1. I finally knew what I wanted to do and it was to have my own box and show as many people as I could this awesome world! I went on and got my L1 and Kids CrossFit cert and ran classes at 2 boxes. Once I started at Teneo I started to get more into weightlifting so I obtained my USAW Certification. After I bought the box I realized that I needed to get a better understanding of nutrition to be able to fully help my community so I got my Precision Nutrition Certification.

I love CrossFit and everything that comes with it. I am not trying to be the “fittest on earth” I just want to be able to keep up with my kids. I love being a strong women and showing others that they can be strong too. Helping people see that their bodies are capable of far more than they realize!

I enjoy helping people reach their goals and know that they are healthier and fitter for it! I am an avid learner and love taking classes and participating in continuing education seminars on a regular basis so I can be sure I’m the best I can be at helping others. Having a background in Corrective Exercise (NASM-CES) and Performance Enhancement (NASM-PES) gives me the knowledge on how to properly scale exercises up or down depending on the client’s need which is extremely important in both producing results and minimizing injury.

There is nothing more rewarding than having a client achieve something they thought previously unattainable. The surge of confidence and personal satisfaction they find for themselves is truly incredible! I am honored and humbled to be a part of the process each and every time!

My Background: I was a wrestler in high school but found my true passion in the weight room where in my senior year I set a bench press record which still stands to this day. In my 20’s I worked on building strength and dabbled in bodybuilding, in my 30’s I trained for marathons, raced in lots of 5k and 10k races, and completed a triathlon. Now in my 40’s I actively compete in Crossfit and Olympic weightlifting and find myself stronger and fitter than I have ever been!

From a very young age, I developed a love for a variety of sports including wrestling. I thrived on the competition and team camaraderie. As an adult you don’t get that feeling as often as you did as a kid and that’s what I was in search of. I wanted to continue to compete and that’s when I found CrossFit in 2011. It was everything I had been looking for. I was able to compete every day and be part of an awesome team/community. After being a part of Teneo for a few years I realized that I wanted more. I was decent at CrossFit but realized that I loved helping others obtain the skills that I had. That’s when I decided to get my L1 and become a bigger part of Teneo.

I was born and raised in Lubbock, Tx (yes, the red desert) and followed my athletic dreams to play football in college. After my stint, there, I came back to Lubbock and had no idea what to do with myself. I went to the typical bro gym, tried to be active in city leagues, anything just to find that comradery I loved back in my football days. In 2011, I was convinced to try crossfit out, and after getting my butt kicked on the first day, I was hooked. In June of 2012, I had broken my ankle due to a “snatch gone bad.” That’s when I realized that I wasn’t getting coached like I needed, nor were other people, after seeing everyone else having to scale due to injuries, not because of performance level. That’s what I decided that I wanted to learn everything I could about crossfit, movement, and coaching. In December of 2012, I received my L1, and started coaching immediately, helping anybody and everybody.

I take pride in helping people from the very basics to the most complex. I love the Olympic movements and have ran a few Olympic lifting seminars. I also have spent some time in Boston, MA under Ben Bergeron, learning from one of the best coaches in America. I also have been a part of “GRID” which is a professional fitness league based off crossfit. I love competing, I love the comradery, and I love that I have found a place that loves crossfit as much as I do! If you ever have any questions about competing, nutrition, or trying to fix your mental game/capacity, please feel free to pick my brain!
I currently have my Level 1, my Level 2, Crossfit Weightlifting, USAW, and NSCF certification. I’ve been looking to start studying for my Level 3, and continue furthering my USAW certifactions.

I have a simple philosophy: Do things right, control your destiny. Simply meaning, if you do what you need to, when you need to, how you need to, and put complete responsibility into yourself, then you will get the results you desire. Thank you CrossFit Teneo for welcoming both Liz and I into the gym, and making us feel at home!

I’ve always enjoyed competing. Ive played many sports competitively. Hockey, soccer, basketball, golf…I’ve always had something to fuel the competitive side in me. I use to be the typical “bro” working out at Lifetime fitness. Ive had plenty of arm days, chest days…Not too many leg days. Decided I needed a change. Walked into Teneo on a random Saturday to see what it was all about. Did my first week and I was like, “damn, you people are crazy! Im staying, I fit right in!”
About a year into crossfit, decided to get my USAW L1. Then a few months later decided to get my L1 crossfit certification. I’ve grown to love Crossfit. Its frustrating at times when you first start out, trust me. I’ve gone through the growing pains. I want to bring athletes the knowlegde and help them develop into the athlete they desire to be while also obtaining the goals I set for myself. I want to be a positive influence that motivates people to be better than they were yesterday. Lets put some work in, have fun, and enjoy this awesome community!

Matt Dillon | Coach

I am a local, growing up in Clinton Township and going to school at Chippewa Valley, where a majority of the athletic programs were great, and the competition was tough. You could always find me with my teammates training on regular basis. I attended Central Michigan University, where I played Rugby. After graduating I ended up on the East Side Anchormen Rugby Club where I still play today and train.

I attended Central Michigan University, where I studied Exercise Science. I spent that time learning to work with athletes, the general public, and in research. During college, I started training at a CrossFit gym to improve my performance for Rugby and loved the energy and environment. After graduating in 2015, I worked at a few large fitness gyms in the Metro Detroit area. In that time, I was an athlete at CrossFit Teneo for awhile before leaving those companies to return back to school and run the Barbell program here.
